How to Prepare Your Home (and Household) for a Remodel

Quick answerThe weekend before demo: empty the work zone completely, clear a 4-foot materials path, photograph everything, designate a staging area for deliveries, label your shutoffs, and cover nearby furniture. Decide three things before day one: where debris goes, working hours and lockup, and who the single decision-maker is.

The week before demo determines the month after it. Homes that are prepped run cleaner, faster, and calmer — and preparation is almost entirely free. Here's the checklist we wish every household ran.

This covers the physical prep, the people-and-pets logistics, and the three decisions to make before day one instead of during week two.

Household logistics

The three decisions to make BEFORE day one(1) Where does the debris trailer/dumpster sit? (2) What are working hours and lockup procedure? (3) Who is the single decision-maker for daily questions? Projects wobble when these get improvised.

Frequently asked questions

Should we move out during a remodel?

Rarely necessary for kitchens/baths — households live through them with a good containment plan. Whole-first-floor or multi-bath simultaneous projects are the ones worth a hotel conversation.

Do I need to be home while crews work?

No — most clients aren't. Agreed access, lockup procedure, and the daily-questions channel replace hovering. Be reachable, not present.

What about dust, really?

Plastic zone walls, sealed vents in the work area, and daily cleanup control the bulk of it — but remodeling is not surgery; expect fine dust and plan one deep clean at the end (ask whether it's in your quote).

Should I tell my neighbors?

A 30-second heads-up about a few loud weeks and occasional driveway deliveries buys enormous goodwill. We're happy to be the ones to do it.
