Tile Installation Cost: Floors, Showers & Backsplashes

Quick answerTile installation labor typically runs $8–$15 per square foot for floors, $15–$30 for shower walls, $800–$2,000 flat for a custom tiled shower pan, and $400–$1,200 for a kitchen backsplash — with tile material adding $2–$15+ per square foot. Any shower quote that doesn't name its waterproofing system isn't a real quote.

Tile is the most labor-intensive finish in your house — which is why installation usually costs more than the tile itself, and why cheap tile labor is the most expensive mistake in remodeling.

Typical 2026 Chicagoland ranges below, including setting materials; tile itself priced separately.

Tile material adds $2–$15+ per sq ft. Large-format and natural stone raise labor: flatter substrate requirements, heavier handling, and sealing.

The waterproofing layer you can't see

Quote red flagIf a shower quote doesn't name its waterproofing system, the price is meaningless. Tile over bare drywall or greenboard fails — the only question is when.

Frequently asked questions

Why is tile labor so expensive?

It's slow, skilled, sequential work: substrate prep, layout, cutting around everything, setting, curing, grouting, sealing. Days of labor for one bathroom floor is normal.

Porcelain or ceramic?

Porcelain is denser, more water-resistant, and suits floors and showers; ceramic is fine for backsplashes and light-duty walls at lower cost.

Can new tile go over old tile?

Occasionally on floors when height and bond can be verified — but showers and anything questionable should come out. Tear-out reveals the problems you're paying to solve.

How soon can we use the new shower?

Typically 48–72 hours after grout/silicone, longer for some sealers. Rushing this shortens the life of everything.
