Costs & PricingTile Installation Cost: Floors, Showers & Backsplashes
Tile is the most labor-intensive finish in your house — which is why installation usually costs more than the tile itself, and why cheap tile labor is the most expensive mistake in remodeling.
Typical 2026 Chicagoland ranges below, including setting materials; tile itself priced separately.
Labor pricing by application
| Application | Typical labor, per sq ft | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Floor tile (straight lay) | $8–$15 | Add for diagonal, herringbone, large-format leveling |
| Shower walls & surrounds | $15–$30 | Includes pattern work; waterproofing priced below |
| Shower pan (custom tiled) | $800–$2,000 flat | The most skill-critical square feet in your house |
| Kitchen backsplash | $400–$1,200 typical job | Outlets, edges & sills drive time |
Tile material adds $2–$15+ per sq ft. Large-format and natural stone raise labor: flatter substrate requirements, heavier handling, and sealing.
The waterproofing layer you can't see
- Modern showers rely on membrane systems behind or over the backer board — not on the tile or grout, which are water-resistant, not waterproof
- A flood test of the pan before tile is the professional standard; ask for it
- Niches, benches, and curbs are the classic leak points — pre-formed waterproof components beat improvised ones
- Movement joints (silicone at plane changes, not grout) prevent the cracked-corner grout every homeowner recognizes
Grout, trim, and the details
- Choose grout color one shade darker than instinct — it forgives real life
- Metal or bullnose edge profiles finish exposed edges; visible cut edges scream DIY
- Seal natural stone and cement grout; skip sealer on epoxy grout and most porcelain
- Heated floors: install-time-only opportunity in baths — modest cost, daily payoff in January

Frequently asked questions
Why is tile labor so expensive?
It's slow, skilled, sequential work: substrate prep, layout, cutting around everything, setting, curing, grouting, sealing. Days of labor for one bathroom floor is normal.
Porcelain or ceramic?
Porcelain is denser, more water-resistant, and suits floors and showers; ceramic is fine for backsplashes and light-duty walls at lower cost.
Can new tile go over old tile?
Occasionally on floors when height and bond can be verified — but showers and anything questionable should come out. Tear-out reveals the problems you're paying to solve.
How soon can we use the new shower?
Typically 48–72 hours after grout/silicone, longer for some sealers. Rushing this shortens the life of everything.
