PermitsDo you need a permit for a flooring installation?
No permit neededNo. Replacing hardwood, luxury vinyl plank, carpet or tile is cosmetic work, and no north-suburb village asks for a permit unless you also alter the structure beneath the floor. There is no permit fee and no inspection for finish-only work. The money goes to the floor itself, typically $6 to $12 per square foot installed for luxury vinyl plank.
Why and when does a permit apply?
Replacing flooring finishes (hardwood, LVP, carpet, tile) is cosmetic work and doesn't require a permit anywhere in the north suburbs, unless you're also altering the structure beneath it.
Inspections to expect
None for finish-only work.
