DIY vs. Pro Painting: An Honest Breakdown
Here's a contractor telling you when NOT to hire a contractor: plenty of painting is genuinely DIY-able, and pretending otherwise would insult your intelligence. The skill isn't rolling paint; it's knowing which projects punish amateurs.
Use this split and you'll spend money only where it buys something real.

The pattern: hire for height, repair-heavy surfaces, sprayed finishes, and volume. DIY the flat, low, forgiving stuff.
Real cost math
A bedroom DIY costs $80-$150 in materials and a weekend; hiring it runs $400-$800. A whole first floor DIY costs ~$300 in materials and eats 3-4 weekends of your life at amateur quality; hiring runs $2,000-$4,000 done in 2-3 days. Value your weekends honestly and the answer usually writes itself.
If you DIY, do these six pro steps
- Wash kitchen/bath walls; scuff-sand glossy surfaces
- Fill and sand every hole; caulk trim gaps with paintable caulk
- Spot-prime patches and stains (stain-blocking primer on water marks)
- Cut in with an angled sash brush, then roll while the cut line is wet
- Two coats, full stop; 'one thick coat' is how streaks are born
- Quality applicators: a $9 roller cover leaves a different wall than a $3 one

What paint sheen where?
Matte/eggshell for walls, satin for kids' rooms and halls, semi-gloss for trim, doors, and baths. Flat hides wall flaws best but scrubs worst.
