Costs & PricingDrywall Repair Costs: From Doorknob Holes to Water Damage
Drywall repair is the errand-sized job that most contractors won't answer the phone for — and one we take seriously. Here's what repairs actually cost in Chicagoland and what determines whether a wall can be patched or needs replacement.
Typical 2026 ranges; matching texture and paint feathering are what separate an invisible repair from an obvious one.
Typical repair pricing
| Repair | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Small holes & dings (patch, sand, spot-prime) | $150–$350 |
| Medium patch (fist-to-dinner-plate, blended) | $250–$500 |
| Large section replacement (per wall area) | $400–$900 |
| Ceiling water-damage repair (after leak fixed) | $400–$1,200 |
| Skim-coat a wall smooth | $300–$700 per wall |
Minimum trip charges exist because even a 20-minute patch requires two return visits for coats to dry. Bundling several repairs into one visit is the single best way to lower per-repair cost.
Repair vs. replace the panel
- Patchable: impact holes, anchor damage, cracks at seams, nail pops, small stains from a fixed leak
- Replace the section: crumbling or soft gypsum, mold on the back side, large sagging water damage
- Investigate first: any stain that's still growing — the leak, not the drywall, is the project
Why texture matching matters
Anyone can fill a hole. The skill is making light rake across the wall at 5pm without revealing a patch. That takes feathered joint compound over a wider area than the hole, matched texture, spot-priming, and painting corner-to-corner rather than dabbing — which is why a proper repair quote covers more wall than you expect.

Frequently asked questions
Can I just use spackle from the hardware store?
For pinholes, absolutely. Anything bigger than a quarter needs backing, tape, or a patch panel — spackle alone cracks and telegraphs through paint.
Is a water stain always mold?
No — a dried, fixed one-time leak often just needs stain-blocking primer. Active moisture or fuzzy growth needs the source fixed and affected material cut out first.
Why does the repaired spot show if the paint matches?
Sheen and roller texture. Fresh paint on one spot reflects differently; painting the whole wall corner-to-corner is the fix.
Do you repair ceilings?
Yes — including water-damage repairs after a plumbing or roof fix, texture blending, and full repaint.
Cost figures are typical Chicagoland market ranges for planning purposes, current as of 2026, and are not a quote. Every project is priced individually after an on-site estimate — condition, selections, and scope change the numbers.
