Skokie service guideQuestions to ask before you say yes to a kitchen remodeling job in Skokie
Nine questions sort almost every kitchen remodeler in Skokie in one conversation. Each has an answer you want to hear and an answer that should end the meeting. Ask them in order, before price comes up, because price only means something after scope, sequence and exclusions are pinned down. Read them off your phone.
Which questions cover insurance and permits?
A mid-range kitchen in Skokie is a $25,000 to $50,000 decision. Twenty minutes of questions is cheap. Skip them and you are trusting a stranger with the most expensive room in the house on the strength of a handshake and a truck that looked clean in the driveway. Ask.
- Can your insurance agent send me the certificate directly? The good answer is a yes and a request for your email. Anything else is the answer.
- Are you registered with the Village of Skokie, and who pulls the permit? The contractor registers and the contractor pulls it. A suggestion that you pull it yourself as the homeowner shifts the liability to you.
- Who is actually in my kitchen, your crew or subs? Either is fine. Not knowing is not.
What should you ask about the project itself?
- Walk me through my kitchen in order. Design and measure, order the long-lead items, then demo. Rough-in, inspection, drywall and paint, flooring, cabinets, counter template, counters, backsplash, appliances, punch list. Fluency here predicts execution.
- What could go wrong in a house like mine? A pro names real risks: 60-amp-era wiring, an unlevel floor, a wall that carries more than it looks like. Nothing, easy job, is a bad sign in a house built in the fifties.
- How do change orders work? In writing, priced before the work proceeds. That is the only right answer.
- Tell me exactly what is excluded. Every honest quote excludes something. Hidden exclusions are where cheap quotes hide.
How do you close the conversation?
- What does done mean? A walkthrough and a written punch list, completed before the final payment.
- Who is my single point of contact, and how fast do you respond? A named person and a norm, same day or next day.
Then the one follow-up that sorts everyone: how would I verify that? Quality contractors hand you the method. A document, a number to call, an address to drive past. Evasion is the entire answer. That is it.
Notice what the good answers have in common: each one is a document, a sequence or a named person, and none of them asks you to take the contractor's word for anything you cannot check from your kitchen table with a phone in your hand.

What else do homeowners ask?
When should I ask about price?
Last. Price only means something after scope, sequence, exclusions and protections are pinned down. Two quotes for the same words can be two different projects.
Is this too much to put a contractor through?
A good one answers all of these in twenty comfortable minutes. We do. Discomfort with accountability questions is the cheapest warning you will ever collect.
Should I ask for references?
Ask anyway, and weigh photo history and review-platform records more. Nobody hands out unhappy references. How they respond to the request is informative.

Cost figures are typical Chicagoland market ranges for planning purposes, current as of 2026, and are not a quote. Every project is priced individually after an on-site estimate; condition, selections, and scope change the numbers.
